Life Skills Program for College Freshmen Heading Abroad

Program Highlights

Structured towards learners who are likely to head abroad for their higher education post 10+2

  • It is structured to deliver life skills in the area of food preparation, inter-cultural sensitivity, basic housekeeping skills and international travel related preparedness
  • Successful completion of this 5 day long program will prepare participants with respect to certain life skills that well be a must for them to transition as ‘university freshmen’ abroad
  • The training be delivered at Vedatya campus, learners can also avail of hostel facility if required
  • The training will be for duration of 5 days, the daily contact time will be 4 hours each day

Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes from this program are as follows:

  • Learner will understand basic cooking techniques and use of home kitchen like utensils and equipment to prepare healthy meals and snacks
  • The objective of acquiring some basic hands on cooking skills will be to avoid over dependence on external sources for your dietary needs
  • Learner will be able to ensure that his/her dorm room space is kept clean and hygienic through a daily/weekly spread of chores
  • Recognize that there are socio-cultural differences that need to be understood and factored in with a sole intent to create respectful healthy working relationships with others coming from different cultures, nationality etc.
  • Be prepared to handle the unexpected during international travel including any health situations

Assessment Methodology

The delivery team will deploy varied assessment tools through an ‘application’ orientation to ensure that the appropriate knowledge, skills transfer is validated.

Housekeeping Essentials

The Housekeeping module provides all the necessary inputs focused on aspects like personal hygiene, cleaning methods and room’s upkeep.

  • By the end of the module, you will have excellent knowledge of:

  • ● Working with cooking ingredients and equipment usually available/ required for basic home style cooking
    ● Basic knife skills required for cutting/ chopping
    ● Preparations of cold and hot food based on personal choice as well as needs of a balanced diet

        Professional Skills: Upon completion of this module, learners will be able to demonstrate:

        ● Demonstrate ability use knives to cut/chop vegetables, do basic ‘mise en place’ to get ready for                    cooking
        ● Cook selected cold/hot dishes that can be had for breakfast/lunch/dinner or as a snack
        ● Prepare a balanced diet plan that ensures a nutritious diet

Travel Essentials & Inter-Cultural Sensitivity

  • 1. Content

  • By the end of the module, you will have excellent knowledge of:
    ● Travel documents required and their safe keep, documents to present to immigration, customs, airline desk etc.
    ● Handling of common questions asked, handling baggage (check in/ in flight) and managing expected situations like flight delays, cancellation or missing connecting flights etc.
    ● Recognizing the significance of understanding socio-cultural differences

        ● Demonstrate understanding of international travel flow with a ability to know guide another                        person
        ● Use first aid and generic medicines based on certain common health situations
         ● Demonstrate a understanding that being sensitive to socio- cultural differences is a critical first                   step towards building healthy, positive relations
