Vedatya has unveiled the country’s first student-led winemaking initiative, taking students on a complete grape-to-glass journey. The programme culminated in a curated on-campus wine tasting event that brought together journalists, industry leaders and hospitality stakeholders for an exclusive showcase of wines made entirely by students.
Unlike most institutes where wine studies are confined to theory, Vedatya’s applied approach allowed students to participate in every step of the process, including fermentation, bottling, tasting and service. This unique programme is the only one of its kind in India, providing students with an experiential edge in international hospitality careers.
“Students can’t truly understand wine until they’ve experienced the production process themselves,” said Sandeep Munjal, Director, Vedatya. “This immersive project-based learning approach not only refined their ability to serve wine knowledgeably but also deepened their understanding of the specialised production cycle.”
Prof Anila Rattan, Head – School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Vedatya, added, “This initiative gives our students a competitive edge and prepares them to excel in an increasingly globalised hospitality industry.”
Guests at the showcase interacted with the young winemakers, hearing stories of experimentation, precision and innovation that shaped each bottle. Faculty highlighted Vedatya’s commitment to sustainable, farm-to-table education models that mirror global culinary trends.
“To recognise what makes a great wine, students must first know its roots, from the soil to the cellar,” commented Associate Professor Debpriya De.
The programme has strengthened students’ technical skills and prepared them for specialised roles in wine service, curation and sommelier expertise. Students from Vedatya’s hospitality and culinary degree programmes, as well as those enrolled in the recently launched CII – VET by EHL programme, gained insights not just into winemaking but also into international career pathways.
With this milestone initiative, Vedatya continues to reimagine hospitality education by offering industry-ready experiences that go beyond the classroom and equip students to thrive in the global hospitality landscape.
